Young people will be young people after all? University of Pennsylvania study: Teenagers more likely to engage in risky driving behaviors

If you are quick and decisive in doing things and dare to speak out, congratulations, you may still have the characteristics of a “young man”! There is a classic line in the movie “God of Gamblers”: “Young people are young people, they are too impulsive.” It means that most of the people who act rashly at the card table are young people who are easy to be impulsive. This sentence may also apply to passers-by between the ages of 18 and 24, and the risks it brings cannot be underestimated. The latest research from the University of Pennsylvania in the United States believes that young people are more likely to engage in dangerous driving behaviors than road users of other age groups.

Bad driving habits among young people emerge one after another. Most people look at their mobile phones while driving.

In this study, the University of Pennsylvania and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia recruited a total of 384 drivers from across the United States, aged between 18 and 24 years old. Participants filled out an online questionnaire developed by the research team to measure their usual driving behavior. The results of the questionnaire showed that 44.5% of the subjects had at least one car accident while driving on the road, and 73% of the subjects had used mobile phones while driving; and the researchers also found that people who like to use mobile phones while driving , it is more likely to occur dangerous driving behaviors such as speeding, running red lights or taking the initiative to overtake.

Elizabeth. Dr. Elizabeth Walshe believes that the use of smartphones while driving can be regarded as an early indicator of car accidents among young people. In the future, distracted driving behavior can be used to prevent drunk driving perpetrators and those who are prone to violating traffic rules in advance, because Research shows that the indicators between the two are highly positively correlated. Perhaps the assistance and voice warnings of in-car electronic products can help reduce dangerous driving behavior, but more importantly, the driver must have a good driving concept when taking the driver’s license test, otherwise once dangerous driving causes an accident, he may be regret but too late.

Fatigue driving is a hidden concern in road accidents. Don’t be greedy for temporary convenience and cause tragedy.

Regardless of whether you are young or not, you must avoid dangerous driving. However, another major danger to road users is “drowsy driving” related to insufficient rest. According to a study by Oxford University Press, sleeping less than 7 hours a night will increase the chance of a car accident. Statistics from Taiwan’s Ministry of Transportation show that the proportion of accidents caused by distracted and tired drivers is as high as 20% every year, and the proportion of accidents on national highways caused by tired drivers even reaches 70%. Therefore, no matter your age, you should pay attention to your physical and mental condition while driving, concentrate on driving the whole process, abide by traffic rules, and do not cause irreparable tragedies due to temporary convenience.
