Which "workplace personality" is more popular? A survey of millions of people revealed: "affability" is the most valuable factor

What qualities do you possess that make you more successful in the workplace? Research from Japan’s Waseda University has shown that supervisors or company leaders have “excellent leadership”, “unique management style”, and “being closer to employees”, which are one of the three major elements that constitute a good leader. Research now published in the “SAGE Journal” points out that showing “affability” at work has a positive effect on company atmosphere and team cohesion.

A joint research team from the University of Arkansas and the University of Minnesota has previously conducted research on five major personalities: conscientiousness, extraversion, openness, neuroticism and agreeableness, and assessed the impact of these personalities on work. Research has found that there is a close correlation between personality traits and work performance, among which “agreeability” has a greater impact.

The research team further collected the results of 142 meta-analyses and used statistical methods to combine multiple independent results through 3,900 studies and surveys of more than 1.9 million subjects. Research has found that agreeableness has a positive impact on 93% of variables; while “neurotic” personality is believed to have many negative impacts on work or teams. Subjects generally said that agreeable people have advantages such as easy communication, excellent leadership, and willingness to take responsibility even if they make mistakes.

In contrast, people with “neurotic” traits not only have difficulty establishing themselves in the workplace, but may also be prone to health concerns. The Journal of the American Heart Association (JAHA) once pointed out that subjects with higher neuroticism indicators may have a higher risk of experiencing cardiovascular disease. A retrospective study by Florida State University in the United States showed that neurotic people are more likely to suffer from Parkinson’s disease than ordinary people.

How to judge the “affinity” standard? Experts reveal common “8 traits”

How to judge the criteria of affinity? Wilmo pointed out that agreeableness is not just about “easy-going personality”, but also has significant differences from ordinary people in the workplace, interpersonal interactions or self-improvement. According to research results, people with agreeable traits usually possess the following 8 traits:

  1. Be motivated. Affiliates often desire self-growth.

  2. Easily contented. Compared with ordinary people, agreeable people are more able to accept life as it is and have the ability to successfully adapt to new environments and systems.

  3. High positivity. High motivation to cultivate and maintain positive relationships with others.

  4. Easy to work with. The ability to coordinate with others and to work effectively is generally high. And regardless of their role, Affinity people always have the ultimate goal of achieving “collective goals”.

  5. Take responsibility. Willing to work hard on tasks and be willing to take on more difficult tasks. In addition, agreeable people are more likely to influence the atmosphere of the work environment.

  6. Be more tolerant. Typically places less emphasis on setting goals and producing personal results, and tends to evaluate the performance of others with greater leniency.

  7. Respect the rules. Be more sensitive to adhering to social norms and more respectful of rules, avoiding rule violations and illegal behavior.

  8. Strong adaptability. Those who have a strong ability to successfully integrate into social roles and institutions, and those who are associated with negative behaviors such as criminal behavior, antisocial behavior, and work absenteeism tend to be lower.

“In short, people with agreeable traits have higher work commitment and can use positive energy to help others or cooperate with others. In other words, their teamwork skills tend to be better,” Wilmot said.
