Will watching too many porn movies affect your mental state? Study reveals consequences: Beware of higher loneliness and inability to fall in love normally

Moderate use of pornographic content such as adult videos can express sexual desire; however, if you watch it too many times or even have a “porn addiction”, you should be aware that it may be related to potential psychological problems? Research published in the “Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy” shows that longer periods of pornographic content use may lead to a decrease in subjective well-being, and users are more likely to experience loneliness and fear of intimacy.

A research team from Bowling Green State University and Eastern Michigan University in the United States recruited a total of 389 college students, most of whom were women, and about 80% of the participants were pornography users. Participants were asked to complete an online questionnaire covering self-assessments of intimacy, social support and loneliness, as well as 2 questions related to pornography use.

Through a statistical method called “latent profile analysis”, the research team divided the subjects into four different categories based on their motivation for using pornography and the degree of perceived compulsion and distress:

  • The first group: users with “low motivation and minimal distress” (accounting for 32.79%).

  • The second group: users who “use pornography simply for enjoyment” (accounting for 44.48%).

  • The third group: users with “low motivation and high degree of distress” (accounting for 9.09%).

  • Group 4: Users with “high motivation and moderate distress” (accounting for 13.36%).

The study found that compared to other types of subjects and non-pornography users, subjects in the fourth group reported higher feelings of loneliness, fear of intimacy and inability to engage in romantic relationships, and less social support . However, the researchers found no significant differences between non-porn users and the second and third groups on these questions.

Study author Daniel WM Maitland believes that the second group with the largest number of subjects is characterized by a low motivation to watch pornographic content, but a slightly higher motivation to watch pornographic content for “sexual pleasure”; while the third group with the lowest number of people Of the three groups, those with lower motivation to view pornographic content had higher levels of distress. Finally, the fourth group had higher levels of motivation, above-average compulsivity, but only average levels of emotional distress. Such results suggest that there is not a single motivation associated with pornography, but multiple motivations.

Maitland said that the research results are consistent with the hypothesis deduced by past academic circles, that is, people’s motivations, attitudes and behaviors towards using pornography are related to their personal psychological state. At the same time, this experiment also verified past research linking “pornography” and “loneliness,” showing that there may be deeper isolation or relationship quality issues underlying the two.

Be careful if your partner watches too much “pornographic content”! Study says: This could be a warning sign for couples to have “relationship deterioration”

Pornography addiction may not only be a warning sign of psychological problems, but may also sound the alarm for a “deterioration of the partnership”? Brigham Young University in the United States analyzed the correlation between pornography and romantic relationships through data from 3,750 subjects. Participants were asked to take questionnaires that reported on relationship satisfaction and stability, as well as measures of porn addiction, such as whether they felt they could not stop watching porn.

After analysis by the research team, the results showed that there is a “negative correlation” between the use of pornography and relationship stability; people who believe that they use pornography more frequently also believe that their marital relationship with their partner may be in trouble and are more likely to discuss it. The need for divorce, separation and reconciliation after separation is also higher than other subjects. In addition, people who use pornography may find it difficult to satisfy their “sex life.”

“Previous research has found that sex life and partner relationships may influence each other. Conversely, people who are less satisfied with their marriage are more likely to dislike having sex with their partner, which in turn leads to increased pornography use.” Study author Brian J. According to Willoughby, subjects in this study were associated with an increase in the amount of porn they watched more frequently and a worsening of their relationship with their partner.

Willoughby believes that watching porn is a very common phenomenon, and almost everyone (especially men) has used porn to express their sexual desires. This means that modern couples must jointly understand porn and pornography, and how to negotiate their use of pornography in the context of a relationship. He believes that if only one of the parties watches porn in private, the relationship between the two parties will be more likely to change when the other party discovers it.
