Itching on the crotch is not necessarily eczema? Urologists reveal “6 common diseases”

The weather is getting warmer, and many men are experiencing redness, swelling and itching in their crotches, which is often embarrassing when walking on the road. Dr. Cheng Wei-ming, an attending physician at the Department of Urology at the Taipei City Hospital Zhongxing Branch, said that the crotch is prone to itching for many reasons. The possible reasons are that men sweat excessively, have poor hygiene habits, have skin diseases such as athlete’s foot, and touch their feet. Caused by touching the genitals without clean hands. If men often have problems with vaginal scratching, they should pay attention to whether it is caused by the following reasons:

  1. Fungal infection. Dr. Cheng Weiming pointed out that the human body’s vaginal environment is humid and hot, which is suitable for mold growth. If men have poor hygiene habits, such as unclean urination and urine sticking to their underwear, it may make the crotch more moist and easily cause fungal infection.

  2. Tinea cruris. If fungal infection occurs in the groin, crotch or groin, it is called “tinea cruris”. It is mostly caused by men touching their genitals or genitals without washing their hands after going to the toilet. In addition to making the patient’s genitals itch and scratch, tinea cruris may also cause red patches on the skin around the thighs.

  3. Eczema. The symptoms of eczema are similar to those of jock itch, where the skin is irritated and inflamed. Sweating, wearing low-quality pants, unwashed clothes, and skin-to-skin friction may all be the causes of eczema. In addition to making the skin itchy, eczema can also cause it to become swollen and red. In severe cases, it can even cause skin breakage and pain.

  4. Inflammation of foreskin/glans. Redness, swelling, and pain at the front of the foreskin or glans may be a sign of inflammation. Common symptoms are pain and itching, and patients often need to remove their foreskin and scratch it to relieve the itching. If inflammation occurs frequently, Dr. Cheng Weiming recommends that patients undergo circumcision surgery to achieve a permanent cure.

  5. Pubic lice parasitism. Pubic lice are a type of sexually transmitted disease. It often parasitizes in human hair. Common clinical symptoms include vaginal itching, rash, and blood spots left after being bitten by pubic lice. Dr. Cheng Weiming pointed out that when treating the disease, the patient’s pubic hair will be shaved first, and then lice-killing ointment will be used to kill the insects.

  6. Inflammation of the urethra. If the vagina is frequently itchy but feels “cannot scratch the itchy area”, this may be due to bacterial infection in the urethra, which may lead to urinary tract inflammation and itching pain. Male urethral inflammation is often caused by “inappropriate sexual behavior” and requires further treatment to relieve itching symptoms.

How to solve the problem of crotch itching? Do not wear tight clothing. If you have athlete’s foot, you need to treat it.

Can crotch itching be prevented? The Mayo Clinic in the United States points out that although crotch itching can easily cause discomfort, the symptoms are usually not serious. Patients only need to follow the following steps and gradually adjust their living habits to effectively avoid the occurrence of crotch itching:

  1. Keep the vagina dry. After exercise, wipe the sweat around the vagina with a clean towel.

  2. Wear clean pants. Change underwear at least once a day and choose more breathable materials to keep your skin dry.

  3. Avoid wearing tight pants. Frequent rubbing of the cloth on the vaginal skin will make the skin prone to sensitivity, redness, swelling, and itchiness.

  4. Avoid sharing items. Avoid letting others wear your clothing, towels or other personal belongings.

  5. Prevent the occurrence of tinea pedis. Men should avoid fungal infections on their feet that may lead to tinea pedis (athlete’s foot). If it spreads to the genitals, the chance of suffering from tinea cruris may be greatly increased.
