Is lung cancer detection and surgery "one-stop service"? Medical reveals the advantages of integrated surgery: Pulmonary nodules can be eradicated in one go while lying down
Ranked first in cancer deaths for 42 consecutive years! Lung cancer accounts for more than 20% of all deaths
Lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer mortality, claimed the lives of nearly 10,000 Taiwanese last year. The prevention, treatment and early detection of lung cancer urgently require the public’s attention and understanding.
Dr. Su Yingjie, chief physician of the Thoracic Surgery Department of Chi Mei Hospital, explained that as the World Health Organization (WHO) revealed that lung cancer has become the largest killer of cancers in the world and the cancer with the highest mortality rate, Taiwan’s medical community has also actively responded to this. Although Taiwan’s lung cancer mortality rate has continued to decline in the past nine years, lung cancer will still claim 10,053 (43.1%) precious lives in 2022, accounting for almost one-fifth (19.4%) of all cancer deaths.
To this end, the Taiwan Health Promotion Administration promotes the “Lung Cancer Screening Subsidy Program”, and Taiwan has become the first country in the world to provide early detection subsidies for “family history of lung cancer” and “heavy smokers”. Dr. Su Yingjie pointed out that the purpose of launching the subsidy program is to make early detection and treatment the top priority.
She was in good health but still found a 0.9cm lung nodule! People who love smoking and have a family history should get screened quickly
Dr. Su Yingjie said that there was a 45-year-old female patient in the clinic previously. She was always in good health and had little medical experience. However, because her mother had a history of lung adenocarcinoma and was eligible for low-dose lung cancer screening by the Taiwan Health Promotion Administration, she underwent a low-dose computed tomography examination in July this year. The result was that a 0.9 cm low-density pulmonary nodule was found in her right upper lung lobe.
Because its location and size were not suitable for computed tomography puncture examination, the patient decided to undergo integrated operating room-assisted thoracoscopic lung resection. During the operation, frozen section examination confirmed that it was early-stage lung adenocarcinoma. Lymphodepletion surgery was also completed during the operation, and the complete resection was completed. Tumor, he was discharged from the hospital three days later and is now back to normal life.
Integrated surgery for one-stop eradication of pulmonary nodules? Medical advantage: You can perform tests and operate at one time while “lying down”
Dr. Su Yingjie pointed out that due to the increasing health awareness of Taiwanese people in recent years, the number of people receiving regular health examinations and low-dose computed tomography has increased year by year, and many small pulmonary nodules have also been discovered. However, pulmonary nodules are small and difficult to section. The traditional method requires using computerized tomography to locate, injecting dye into the lung surface through fine needle puncture, and entering the operating room to receive anesthesia and surgery.
In response to the national lung cancer screening program policy, many medical institutions have begun to introduce “integrated operating rooms” and cooperate with the latest generation of surgical positioning assistance robotic arm “Artis Pheno” to assist in locating tiny pulmonary nodules during surgery and improve Surgery success rate. The advantage of the integrated operating room is that it can be a “one-stop” solution to the patient’s preoperative computed tomography positioning, waiting time, inconvenience of switching between operating tables, as well as the risk of gas embolism caused by pneumothorax and local bleeding, and image inaccuracy caused by the discoloration of the contrast agent. Qing and other issues.
The 5-year survival rate of stage 4 lung cancer is only 10%. Doctors urge: People with lung abnormalities should be tracked regularly
Dr. Su Yingjie said that the integrated operating room has more advantages than traditional computer puncture examination in locating and treating small pulmonary nodules. Taking Chi Mei Hospital as an example, the number of pulmonary nodule operations assisted by integrated operating rooms has increased from 5 cases in 2017 to 157 cases in 2023, a growth rate of more than 30 times.
It is worth noting that the mortality and survival rates of lung cancer are closely related to the stage of diagnosis. The five-year survival rate for stage 1 lung cancer is as high as 90%, but by stage 4 it plummets to only 10%. Dr. Su Yingjie pointed out that the progression of lung cancer highlights the importance of early diagnosis and early treatment. If there are lung-related abnormalities, you should seek medical examination as soon as possible. If there are no abnormalities, you still need to follow up regularly to increase the chance of early detection of lung cancer and avoid missing opportunities.
