A research team from the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands released a large-scale prospective data analysis at the 2022 European Society of Cardiology Annual Meeting. Study author Tinka J. Van Trier, MD, of the Amsterdam Medical Center, noted that the overall health benefits of quitting smoking for people who already have atherosclerosis are severely underestimated. Trier also believes that the research results are not surprising. Nowadays, more and more treatment drugs are available, but smoking cessation, an “affordable” and significant prevention method, should still be taken seriously.

According to the study, taking two cholesterol-lowering drugs plus an anti-inflammatory drug resulted in cardiovascular event-free survival that was equivalent to that of smoking cessation alone.
