Why do alopecia areata, alopecia areata, and pressure baldness occur? Harvard reveals "7 major causes" of common hair loss

International superstar Will Smith publicly slapped Oscar winner Chris Rock, which has recently become a global focus. His wife Jada Koren Pinkett-Smith’s “hair loss due to illness” has also caused a lot of discussion.

“Harvard Health Publishing” of Harvard Medical School in the United States points out that there are many causes of hair loss, which may be caused by different diseases or lifestyle habits, including suffering from severe immune diseases or long-term use of specific drugs, which may indeed lead to severe hair loss. 7 common causes of hair loss in life:

  1. Stress-induced hair loss: Hair loss caused by major stress, such as surgery, female childbirth, excessive psychological stress and other factors. Hair can fall out from all over the scalp and can easily be found on pillows, bathtubs or hairbrushes.

  2. Drug side effects: Taking drugs such as lithium, β-receptor inhibitors, anticoagulants, heparin, amphetamines or L-dopa may be accompanied by hair loss. In addition, cancer chemotherapy drugs can also cause widespread hair loss.

  3. Autoimmune diseases: Immune diseases such as lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, hyperthyroidism or thyroid hypotrophy are more likely to cause hair loss. The reason may be endocrine disorders or the immune system attacking cells throughout the body, weakening the function of scalp tissue, thereby causing hair loss.

  4. Tinea capitis: Tinea capitis is a skin disease caused by a dermatophyte infection, which causes the hair to peel off in a scaly manner along with the scalp. Tinea capitis mainly occurs in children and the elderly. In severe cases, it may even form swellings on the head and cause permanent scarring alopecia.

  5. Alopecia areata: It is one of the autoimmune diseases and is usually divided into three types: patchy alopecia areata, total alopecia areata and generalized alopecia areata. Patchy alopecia areata is more common, with multiple patches of baldness appearing on the scalp. Severe “alopecia totalis” causes patients to lose almost all hair on the scalp; generalized alopecia areata refers to hair loss all over the body.

  6. Traumatic hair loss: refers to hair loss caused by hair styling techniques such as hair braiding and hair dyeing, such as exposing hair to high temperatures and distorted environments (such as hair perming machines), strong chemicals (hair bleaching, hair dyeing), or excessive pulling of hair. (such as braiding or combing hair) may cause a certain degree of hair loss.

  7. Hereditary/androgenic hair loss: It is one of the most common causes of hair loss in men. Hereditary hair loss usually starts on the sides of the temples, and as we age, the hairline shows a gradual regression trend. If it occurs in women, it can cause the hair on the top of the scalp to become thinner and thinner.

How to prevent hair loss from continuing to occur? Start by reducing stress and changing your eating habits

According to Harvard Health Publishing, some forms of hair loss can be prevented by reducing sources of stress, eating a nutrient-rich diet, and adopting safer hair care practices. If you are in the treatment stage of the disease, you should communicate with your doctor in detail and consider switching to drugs to reduce hair loss.

In addition, hair loss caused by fungal infections can be prevented by keeping your hair clean and not sharing hats or combs with others. If you encounter hereditary hair loss or stress-induced hair loss, it is recommended to go to a dermatologist for further consultation. Active medication can help improve hair loss and maintain scalp health.
